Postgraduate study

Postgraduate study may be undertaken to further your career, change careers, consolidate knowledge acquired in the workplace, for accreditation or for interest. The postgraduate study available in our School is available either by coursework or research.

Research degrees

Research degrees are a rewarding and challenging choice of study as they involve the contribution of substantially original knowledge to your chosen field. You will have seen from the profiles in this publication how exciting research can be. However, the decision to enter research is often not made until the later years of an undergraduate degree when your aptitude, interests and intended career are clearer. The completion of an Honours year assists with this decision and is a requirement for entry. The completion of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) generally takes between three and four years, full-time, while a Master of Science (MSc) takes between one and two years, full-time.

Coursework degrees

These degrees comprise lectures, tutorials and laboratory work, similar in style to an undergraduate degree, but recognising that tertiary study has already been completed.

The Master of Nutrition and Dietetics provides an alternative pathway to the Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) for those seeking accreditation as a dietitian and contains many practical elements, such as clinical placements. Recognising that students must already have completed study in biochemistry and physiology to gain entry, the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics is two years in length, whereas the BSc (Nutrition) is four.

The Master of Applied Science (Molecular Biotechnology) is intended for industry employees and those experienced in related fields to obtain relevant knowledge in molecular biotechnology. Selected students (based on academic merit and determined by a quota) participate in placements in industry. This degree is one year in duration and assumes students have previously completed substantial study in areas of relevance to molecular biotechnology such as chemistry, biology, genetics, and molecular biology. A graduate diploma and graduate certificate option are also available (please note that students in these degrees are not eligible for selection to a placement).
