My group works in the general area of Physical Biochemistry. We study contemporary problems in the interface between biology, and the physical sciences. Much of our work has implications for the understanding of cellular function at the molecular level and hence is of relevance to the fundamental basis of disease.
Our major technological focus is NMR spectroscopy. We use this technique to study metabolic and membrane transport processes in cells, mostly the human erythrocyte. We also make extensive use of NMR to determine the structure in solution of peptides and proteins. Recent emphasis has been on the components of platypus venom and a potassium ion channel from heart. Our other emphasis is on mathematical modelling of biochemical systems, especially metabolism, and for this we make extensive use of Mathematica.
